The fountain seemed a little expensive at first, but it's so much more well-built than some of the plastic ones I saw at PetSmart that I definitely think it's worth the extra money. We have 2 Bengal cats who enjoy drinking from running water and they took to the new fountain right away. It does require a bit of monthly maintenance to keep it clean, but it comes with clear instructions, is not difficult to perform and is worth the extra effort to keep our cats drinking happily. We use inexpensive gallon jugs of purified drinking water, rather than tap water, which seems to keep it even cleaner. I would recommend this fountain to others.

Thank you for your great question, Andree! You can absolutely use the fountain without the filter.
However, please understand that while you can put filtered water into the fountain, that doesn't mean that the water will remain as pure. Your pet's saliva or other environmental factors can get into the water. For this reason, for the best results, the fountain should be filtered as well.
